Litter training is not meant to train your dog to never go potty outside. Take a bag with when you exercise.

The highly absorbent litter material is made from paper and wood pulp products. Dog litter has special properties, which absorb moisture turning the litter to saw dust. After your pet has used the litter you scoop out the soiled litter. Completely change the litter and wash out the box twice a week. Vacuum the area once a day to remove any saw dust that may be on the floor from puppies jumping out of the box.

In as little as a week or two, you can get your pet off to excellent start on a total housetraining program. Puppies can seek out the pan on their own after a few days. Every pup is unique and it may take a few weeks. Follow the guidelines listed on this website and you and your pet can relax, you no longer have to go out during bad weather.

  • Set Up: select a confined space close to family activity, place bed, water, food, and litter box. We use a exercise pen. Make sure to keep the litter box far away from food and water

Snowbelle loved her area. I loved the peace of mind knowing she and the house were safe.

  • Schedule: Take your puppy to use the litter box according to the same schedule every day. There should be at least 6 trips to the litter box per day. It is important to keep in mind to direct your puppy to the litter box soon after eating, drinking or exercise in addition to scheduled trips. Your puppy's gastro colic reflexes tell him/her to go potty soon after eating or drinking accidents can be kept to a minimum if you keep a active watch within the first 15 minutes of a feeding. As the puppy gets older increase the time as the organs grow and have more control. Do not carry your puppy to the litter box. Have your puppy walk or move the puppy's legs yourself as you direct to the litter box. Once you start to carry the puppy the puppy will expect you to carry it all the time and will not seek out the litter box on his/her own.

  • Discipline: Only when you see a accident happen can you discipline your puppy. Make eye contact with the puppy then point and direct the puppy to look at the soiled mess. Speaking in a low tone say no or any short word you want then lead the puppy to their crate in a quiet place away from the family and cover the crate. You should use this time to clean the soiled area. it is important that the puppy not see you clean up after him/her, they may soil again to see you clean up!

  • Praise: A dog learns faster through positive reinforcement. so praise, praise, praise. When the job is done well, take puppy out of exercise pen to play and explore.

  • Move litter box to quiet spot: Puppy's like privacy, so once your puppy has master the litter box you can take down the exercise pen and move the litter box to a quiet out of the way spot . I use an exercise pen for several months before moving. Puppies feel safe in a confined space. I use baby gates to block of living room and hallways until puppy is big enough to feel safe in the home. You can expect to go back to directing your puppy to the new litter box area for a day or two, Accidents will happen be patient and consistent.
